Whale Watching
Turtle Island has an abundant marine ecology because of the Black Tide Warm Current which passes northward through here all year long. It is one of the three major fishing areas in Taiwan—primarily shrimps, crabs, squids, octopuses, and branchiostegidae are caught here. The migration of many kinds of fish to this area attracts whales and dolphins. This is a popular whale and dolphin watching spot.
Turtle Island is located about 10 kilometers east of Yilan. People in Yilan regard the island as a spiritual landmark. It was named Turtle Island because it looks like a turtle floating in the sea. Under the jurisdiction of Toucheng Town, Yilan County, its area is 60 acres, 3.3 kilometers from east to west, and 1.7 kilometers wide. The “head” and “shell” consist of two volcanoes, and the “tail” gets its appears from a thin sandbank which changes with the tide—just like a turtle swinging its tail.
Besides appreciating the beauty of whales and dolphins, the eight spectacular scenic spots are definitely worth a visit.
Obervar ballenas y delfines

The Park was formerly the Luodong Branch office of the Forestry Administration and the old log pond during the Japanese occupation period. In 1982, the lumber business came to an end. This park has more or less maintained its original look since then. In 2004, the Forestry Administration Office created plans to turn this site into a Lumber Industry Memorial Park as a reminder of Taiping Mountain's golden era of logging and the historical development of Luodong. The Taiwan Lumber Industry Memorial Park occupies a ground area of approximately 20 hectares. It features an ecological pond (the log pond), aquatic plants pond, aquatic plants display area, a steam train engine display area, a railway area, and a wooden path by the water. It serves tourism, educational, cultural, and conservational purposes. It is especially quiet and beautiful in the late afternoon.
The little island in the middle of the log pond is a natural ecological showroom. More than 20 different bird species can be seen here. On the south of Songluo Hall are six well-maintained old steam engines on display. While visiting here, visitors will certainly recall memories of the glorious history of the lumber industry.
Everyone’s dream of cruising the Dongshan River has now finally come true. In June , 2004, the waterway from Dongshan River Water Park to the Taiwan Theater Museum was officially opened. Here, visitors can feel the gentle breeze brushing against their cheeks. Leisure like this can be found nowhere else but Dongshan River.
Smaller boats which can accommodate eight passengers are powered by electricity, while bigger solar-powered boats can take as many as 40 passengers. Both boats are less noisy and pollution-free. Boating on the Dongshan River is especially attractive to those who want to get close to water. It has been popular among visitors since its introduction, successfully giving a boost to local tourism.

Wuweigang Bird Sanctuary
Wuweigang is a natural habitat for wild ducks. It was once a river situated at the southeast of the Lanyang Plain, facing the Pacific Ocean and connected with Pei-fan-ao at its south. The river was named Wuweigang (“a port without a tail” in Chinese), because the river was blocked, preventing the water from draining out to sea. Surrounding the river are Ta-keng, Kangkou, Kangpien, Lingchiao, Yueiming villages.
Over time, a reed-filled marsh formed in Wuweigang. It became hidden and quiet as windbreak trees, like tall beefwoods, Hibiscus tiliaceus, and screw pines, encircled the marsh. The pathless environment reminds one of the scene Henry Thoreau depicts in his classic work, “A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers”. The site is spectacular and rare along Taiwan’s coast. The area is a popular spot for wild ducks to spend the winter months.
Starting in November every year, at least 3,000 wild ducks gather in Wuweigang. The species are numerous, including migrants such as the Green-Winged Teal, the Spot-Billed Duck, the Northern Pintail, and the scene is spectacular as the ducks fly back and forth between the lake and the sea and up and down with the rippling waves. There are approximately 140 species of birds found at Wuweigang every year. Winter (November to February) is the best season for bird watching activities.

White Rice Community (Rice Clog Community)
Rice Clog Community, which is well-known for producing clogs (wooden shoes), is located in southwest Suao, home to approximately 10 households. Legend has it that the community got its old name “Rice Urn” from a deity. During old times, residents worked long and hard, but harvests were meager. Just as they were verging on starvation, a deity took pity on the populace and placed an earthen grain urn at the foot of the nearby mountain. From then on, clean, wholesome grain gushed out of the urn every day, in quantities that were just enough to sustain the village. This continued for some time, until greed prompted a villager to try to hoard the grain. He broke the urn, only to find it empty. That was the last time the villagers saw their "free lunch," and thereafter only the name Baimi survived to remind them of nature's bountiful generosity.
The community has a modish outfit, with virtually every house displaying colorful decorations, some of the paths paved with tiles. A clog museum demonstrates how a wooden clog is made, displaying clogs of different styles and functions. Tourist can come to the museum and design a pair of clogs of their own.
Renze Hot Springs
Another popular spot for visitors to Taiping Mountain are the hot springs at Renze. Situated 500 meters above sea level, Renze Hot Springs are a stopover on the road to Taiping Mountain Forest Recreation Area. The colorless, odorless mineral water here contains calcium carbonate and is very hot--frequently above 95 degrees Celsius. Bathing in the springs leaves the skin lustrous and smooth. Visitors here can also enjoy walking on nearby forest paths and watching the birds.
Fuente termal Tsio Zu Tser (antigua fuente termal Tsen Tser)

Taiwanese Opera
The opera is said to begin at Yilan in late Qing Dynasty. Its earliest form adopted elements of five si(s) (meaning operas), including Hakka tea-picking si, luan tan si, che gu si, Siping si , and Beijing si. These five operas also show their influences on its repertoires, music, costumes, and body movements. Its singing in Taiwanese is combined with the operatic form of Chinese operas. It is recorded that Taiwanese Opera is the only opera born in Taiwan and now continues to be a favorite folk art in Taiwan.

Each group carries a god’s statue in a 100m race. The group that finishes the race in the shortest time is the winner. Zao-ang has about 100 years of history. In the past, the villagers prayed for good fortune and expelled the bad omens. To do so, they carried the god on a sedan chair to patrol around the village. Later, it became the race we have now.
Yashang ( Yilan-style marinated and smoked duck)
In old times, ducks were processed in salt and smoked in sugar to add flavors to the meat. Now, cured and smoked duck, known as Yashang, is one of the distinctive local foods in Yilang.
Ducks have been banned from being raised and bred on rivers, marking an end to Yilang’s reputation as “Leading Duck Farm”. Modernized Yashang has delicate taste and good for heath-minded customers.
Century Egg (also known as preserved egg)
In the 1970’s, Century Egg had been found residue of lead, causing a panic among customers. As a result, its sale plummeted, wreaking havoc on duck breeding households. Luodong authorities took a number of measures to maintain farmers’ livelihood and save the eggs as a traditional Chinese cuisine. With the help of National Taiwan University, the first lead-free Century Egg was introduced in 1979. The eggs are now not only popular across the island but also exported to the U.S., Japan, Canada, and South Africa.
Sanxing Green Onion Pancake
Thanks to ample rain and the pollution-free water from the Lanyang Stream, Sanxing Green Onion is famous around the island for its rich flavor, delicate texture and various nutrients. The dough of Sanxing Green Onion Pancake is made from brown rice, lotus seeds, and black beans, lending it a very chewy texture.

Cow Tongue-shaped Pastry
Cow tongue-shaped pastry is a must eat in Yilang. In the past, a string was threaded through the center of the cake and hung around the neck of a four-month baby to collect his/her saliva as a blessing ritual. It is so named due to its resemblance to cow tongues. Now it has become a distinctive local snack with a variety of flavors, like honey, milk, sea weed, brown sugar and peanut.
Xilu Meat
Xilu Meat is another traditional Yilan dish and it is the favorite of spicy taste lovers. It is pork shreds stir-fried in large amounts of black pepper and a bit a red chili, together with Chinese cabbage and bamboo shoot, then braised in chicken stock. The strong taste of the dish goes well with rice.
Gaozha
Gaozha is a typical Yilan dish known for its complex making process. First, chicken, pork and shrimp is ground into a paste. The paste is mixed with chicken stock and potato starch to thicken, it is then cooled until set. Finally, the "meat tofu" is cut into blocks, then deep fried until it turns golden in color. This dish represents the people of Yilan County-- apparently cold on the outside, but actually piping hot inside.
The finished product has a crispy skin and a soft or jelly-like center. Now the dish has become one of the entrées at the state banquets.
Zaobing
Zaobing, Yilan’s specialty, is made of ground pork, fat meat, sugared gourd, flour, and duck eggs. The mixed ingredients are then wrapped into rolls by Tofu skin. After that, the rolls are steamed, cooled, and deep fried. The unique taste is unforgettable.
Bizcocho agridulce
Bao Shin Fen Yuan

Bolita rellena de frijol rojo de Luo Don

Mashed Taro
It used to be a required entrée in local banquets. First, taro is steamed and mashed, then mixed with lard, duck eggs, sugar and dried kumquat. The batter is steamed again for one or two hours. The sweet desert delivers rich aroma and delicate taste.
Like Gaozha, mashed taro requires complex making processes, challenging chefs’ skills and patience.
Similarly, this dish represents the people of Yilan County-- apparently cold on the outside, but actually piping hot inside.
